What are braces and how do they do?

Dental braces are a way of straightening or moving your teeth, to improve the alignment, improving your smile and function. Braces can also help you look after the long-term health of your teeth and gums and make eating more comfortable, by spreading the biting pressure across all your teeth.

Every smile is unique, which is why Braces treatment starts with a consultation. During consultation, our dentist will help you determine what and which braces method can do for your smile. Therefore, encourage you to share your treatment goals with us at your consultation.

How braces work?

Braces work by putting pressure on the teeth, to slowly move them in the right direction. As the pressure takes effect, the bone in the jaw changes to allow the teeth and their roots to move.

Reasons for me to use braces

There are many reasons why you might want, or be advised, to have braces. Some of the most common reasons are: ☑overcrowded or crooked teeth ☑not enough, or too much, spacing between your teeth ☑upper front teeth that stick out (called an ‘overjet’) ☑lower teeth that bite too far behind your upper teeth (called an ‘overbite’) ☑upper front teeth that bite behind your lower ones (called an ‘underbite’) ☑to improve the appearance of your smile Braces work by putting pressure on the teeth, to slowly move them in the right direction. As the pressure takes effect, the bone in the jaw changes to allow the teeth and their roots to move.

What are my options?

☑Metal braces/ traditional braces
☑Clear ceramic braces
☑Self-ligating braces
☑Invisalign

Metal Braces/ Traditional Braces

Traditional braces are made of metal. They include brackets that are attached to the front of your teeth or bands that fit around each tooth, as well as flexible wires or arch wires that hold the brackets or bands together. Now,modern brackets are smaller and less noticeable than the notorious “metal-mouth” braces that many adults remember. With the new heat-activated archwires use your body heat to help teeth move more quickly and less painfully than in the past.

Ceramic Clear Braces

Ceramic braces are the same size and shape as metal braces, except that they have tooth-coloured or clear brackets that blend into teeth colour which is less noticeable.

Self-Ligating braces

Self-ligating braces look like conventional braces and are placed relatively the same way. The exception is that self-ligating braces don’t use elastics (rubber bands). Instead this system uses special clips or brackets with a spring-loaded door. The brackets maintain pressure on the arch wire, helping move your teeth along at a steady pace. Self-ligating braces are capable of correcting certain complex malocclusion (misaligned bite) issues and may be a viable option for patients with unique circumstances.

Clear Aligner (Invisalign)

Invisalign treatment is the process of wearing a series of clear, removable aligners that gradually straighten your teeth. No brackets and wires, and none of the restrictions that come with metal braces.

Its made of flexible plastic — specifically, a patented thermoplastic material called SmartTrack® created exclusively for Invisalign treatment.

Benefits, people may not even notice you’re wearing them. You can remove them to eat and drink, to brush and floss, or for special occasions. There are no metal brackets or wires that could irritate your mouth or break, sending you to your doctor for an emergency visit.
